Mira Cinema: IRINA PALM at Wadsworth Atheneum

This weekend is the climax of the 2008 summer film series at the Wadsworth Atheneum. To finish off the series, The Wonders of a Woman, curator Debbie Gaudet has selected the 2007 British Comedy-Drama, Irina Palm. The film features Marianne Faithful as a middle-aged widow, searching to help her son's family with the medical expenses for their critically child. To do so, she takes a job in a sex club in London, where she quickly comes by the stage name of the title, Irina Palm. It's an interesting story about the lengths people down on their luck will go to for family and dignity, with your fair share of British social commentary on class and sex. The film plays Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon at 2pm. Each screening is followed by a discussion of the film.

*Disclaimer: I am employed in the Theater Department of the Wadsworth Atheneum, and Ms. Gaudet is my supervisor. Also, I intro the film on Friday and Saturday, as well as lead the discussion. But this is a fun movie.
