Spencer G. Shaw, First Black Librarian in CT

Spencer Shaw
Spencer Shaw, by Mira Hartford

Pic of the day: This is a portrait I took for an article a friend is writing for a local magazine. This gentleman is Spencer Shaw, who was the first black librarian in the state of Connecticut and to serve as a Branch Manager in the Hartford Public Library. He and his family were Hartford natives. In fact, he was born and raised in Upper Albany. He's a fascinating and engaging storyteller.

  1. This is a fine photograph of Spencer.

It fails, however, to capture the essence of the man who was my professor and mentor years ago at the University of Washington.

That photograph would show Spencer in the middle part of a story, self-immersed in the tale, with a semi-circle of mesmerized children hanging on every nuance of every word.

Thank you, Spencer, for passing along to me just a small part of that marvelous gift.
